The complex of Sacro Monte is the oldest Italian sanctuary with 45 Chapels, 800 lifesize wooden and terracotta statues, 4000 frescoed figures produced by prominent Piemontese artists of the period. Varallo is surrounded by the Special Nature Reserve with wonderful panoramic paths on Monte Rosa and the valleys.
The Chursh of St. Maria Delle Grazie originated in the 15th century and inside are the very famous Gaudenziana Walls by Gaudenzio Ferrari which comprises a cycle of 21 frescos relating to the life of Jesus. The collegiate church of Saint Gaudenzio is a beautiful 18th century reconstruction of a 12th century building in which are conserved many paintings by various Valsesian artist, including those by Gaudenzio Ferrari. The town has a very charming historic quarter and a picture gallery with a collection of works by Gaudenzio Ferrari, Tanzio da Varallo and other illustrious “Old Masters” of Sacro Monte who worked in the 1400s.
