Situated among the green forest on the summit
of a rocky spur above Varallo, is Sacro Monte Mountain in the Piemonte
region, the oldest, the most artistic and religious of the area. The
Sacro Monte of Varallo, founded in 1491, is oldest
“New Jerusalems” reproductions of holy places of Palestine
with its 45 chapels. The architecture, sculpture (over 800 statues
in manycoloured terracotta and wood) and painting which bring to life
scenes all with the natural grandeur. For an emotive impact without
equal. This natural terrace overlooks the lower Valsesia valley to
Monte Fenera, and towardsnorthwest in the background, you can see
the great massif of Monte Rosa.
Varallo is a typical eighth century town with narrow
streets and low arches. The facades of the houses and open galleries
invite you to discover the town. It has rich art treasures: among
which are the splendid frescoed walls by Gaudenzio Ferrari, acycle
of 21 scenes of the life of Jesus which are situated in the Church
of Madonna delle Grazie.
In this Marvellous corner stands the hotel “Casa del
Pellegrino”. The hotel was constructed inside the Chapel
of “Il Cenacolo” where religious services were held, and
where it is possible to admire the original frescos.
Situated next to the Basilica on the Sacro Monte of Varallo, which
is the oldest and most charming of all the Holy mountains in the Piemonte-Lombardy
region. Inside the hotel is the chapel of “Il Cenacolo”
where holy services were held. It is still possible to see and admire
the original frescos in this chapel which has been transformed into
a meeting room for small conventions or seminars.
The hotel has 32 room with telephones and television. Many the room
have retained the period forniture to conserve the ascetic antique
ambience and some of the rooms have a fantastic view of Varallo and
the River Sesia.
There are two restaurants available to our guests: La Sala del Cenacolo
has a beautiful fresco on the ceiling on which is reproduced the scene
of the Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci. The other dining room has
a wonderful view of the Varallo and the valley below. There is a bar,
a lounge with panoramic views, a reading room and a meeting room with
TV, video and projector. It is an ideal place for a tranquil, cultural
or spiritual holiday.
